Former Hurling Champion DJ Carey Jailed for Cancer Treatment Fraud

Published:

DJ Carey has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail for defrauding nearly €400,000 from friends, family, and supporters by falsely claiming he needed money for cancer treatment, which he never had.

The former Hurling champion, who hails from Maynooth, Co Kildare, admitted to deceiving 13 individuals, including prominent figures like Denis O’Brien and Owen and Ann Conway, among others. This deceitful act was described by Judge Martin Nolan as an exploitation of people’s goodwill, emphasizing the seriousness and reprehensible nature of Carey’s actions.

Although Judge Nolan expressed doubt that Carey would engage in similar misconduct in the future, he highlighted that the athlete’s reputation had been irreparably damaged. Known for his stellar career in inter-county GAA with Kilkenny, DJ Carey, now 52, faced his sentencing at the Criminal Court of Justice in Dublin today, where he was handed a lengthy custodial sentence.

During the court appearance, Carey was attired in a purple jacket, navy shirt, and black shoes. Following the judge’s instructions, he stood and was escorted to begin his prison term.
