Horrified residents in a popular British holiday destination have shared disturbing videos of apparent sewage seeping through the ground during heavy rainfall. Startling footage depicts sewage pushing up a manhole cover and spilling onto the street. The rain caused the waste to liquefy rapidly, resulting in the surrounding area being flooded with a murky brown liquid. The video, posted online on October 29, was filmed on a main road in Fuengirola, a preferred location for British tourists and expatriates on Spain’s Costa del Sol.
A local passerby remarked, “The smell is unbearable.” A town hall spokesperson mentioned, “We have deployed a specialized team with vehicles and personnel working throughout the city to assess and address any necessary actions. Continuous monitoring is in place, and efforts are ongoing to restore normalcy.”
On social media, users made light-hearted comments about the situation, with one individual humorously stating, “When you lose the battle just before reaching the bathroom.” Another video, shared on the same day, shows a “faecal fountain” further along the coast in Torremolinos, another popular British vacation spot. A stream of ankle-deep sewage flowed down the road, with a spray column resembling a water feature in the middle. The Andalusia region in Spain woke up to chaos due to a severe storm that brought heavy rain, tornadoes, and flash floods.
The provinces of Huelva and Seville were severely impacted, with Huelva experiencing up to 160 liters of rain per square meter. This incident occurred just a month after an explosion on a “tourist boat” in the Costa del Sol resort left eight people injured. Three of the victims sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. The explosion took place as the motorboat, referred to locally as a tourist boat, was departing from the marina in the Spanish town.
Footage from the scene showed firefighters at the marina extinguishing the flames with hoses from the closest dry land point after locals on jet skis and other boats assisted the distressed passengers and helped extinguish the fire. The incident was reported around 12:20 pm on October 4, with several witnesses contacting emergency services as a black plume of smoke rose into the air, visible from nearby beaches. The cause of the explosion remains uncertain.
A fisherman in the vicinity commented, “It was an open polyester boat, a dangerous combination with fuel as it burns quickly.” The boat sank due to the onboard fire, leading to the area’s closure for investigation.
Fuengirola Town Hall issued a statement saying, “Emergency response teams, including the Rescue and Lifesaving Service, Fire Department, Local Police of Fuengirola, and Civil Guard, promptly responded to a boat fire at the marina near the harbor entrance. Due to reasons still under investigation, an explosion occurred, igniting the boat. The crew was swiftly rescued by the Rescue Service.
“Eight individuals were aboard, all sustaining injuries, with three in serious condition, receiving immediate medical attention. Following the explosion, the boat sank, and authorities from the Andalusian Ports Agency are closely monitoring the situation to evaluate any required anti-spill measures.”
