Saturday’s stabbing incident on a train in Cambridgeshire is not being classified as an act of terrorism, as confirmed by the Home Secretary. Shabana Mahmood provided an update stating that two individuals, both British-born British nationals, were apprehended in Huntingdon. She commended the rapid response of emergency services and lauded the courage displayed by both train staff and passengers on the LNER train.
Authorities reported that a 32-year-old British male and a 35-year-old man of Caribbean descent, also a British national, are in police custody. The attack resulted in eleven individuals sustaining injuries, with nine of them initially in critical condition on a London-bound train. Following treatment, four of the injured have been released from the hospital. The stabbings occurred shortly after the train’s stop in Peterborough.
British Transport Police Superintendent John Loveless characterized the incident as “shocking,” refraining from attributing a motive to the stabbings. He mentioned that the first arrest was made within eight minutes of the attack being reported. Out of the eleven individuals hospitalized, four have been discharged after their conditions improved. Mr. Loveless emphasized that there is currently no indication that the incident was terrorism-related.
The assault unfolded on a train departing from Peterborough in Cambridgeshire at 7.42 pm. Police reportedly used a Taser on a man wielding a large knife during the incident. British Transport Police (BTP) disclosed that two suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the assault on the 6.25 pm service from Doncaster to London King’s Cross on Saturday.
