McLaren has issued a formal apology to their drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, following their disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Despite finishing in second and fourth place, McLaren faced scrutiny from race officials due to potential violations regarding the minimum width of the rearmost skid on their cars.
In a statement released by McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, it was revealed that the team was found to be in breach of Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations, which stipulates a minimum skid thickness of 9mm. Car 4 exceeded this requirement by 0.12mm, while Car 81 surpassed it by 0.26mm.
The statement further explained that both cars encountered unexpected levels of porpoising during the race, leading to excessive contact with the track surface. McLaren is currently investigating the factors contributing to this issue, including accidental damage sustained by the cars post-race, which resulted in increased floor movement.
Acknowledging that the breach was unintentional and without any deliberate intent to violate regulations, McLaren extended their apologies to Lando and Oscar for the loss of points, especially considering their strong performances throughout the weekend. The team also expressed remorse to their partners and fans for the setback.
Despite the disappointment, McLaren remains resolute and focused on the remaining two races of the season. The disqualification has reshaped the Drivers’ World Championship landscape, with Norris maintaining his lead with 390 points, while Verstappen’s victory in the Las Vegas Grand Prix has put him on equal footing with Piastri, creating a tight title race.
Both Norris and Piastri expressed disappointment over the disqualification, setting the stage for a competitive finale in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The upcoming races will be pivotal in determining the championship outcome, with Verstappen emphasizing the role of luck and performance in the title race.
Looking ahead, the season finale promises thrilling action, with Verstappen and Norris aiming for victory in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. The intense competition guarantees an exciting conclusion to the 2025 Formula 1 season.
