Rachel Reeves is reportedly considering introducing new higher council tax bands to target owners of expensive properties. The Chancellor aims to address financial gaps by focusing on wealthy homeowners before the upcoming Budget on November 26.
While no final decisions have been made, Reeves has hinted at including higher taxes for the affluent in the Budget. Discussions are ongoing on the best approach to implement increased taxation on high-end properties.
The potential measures may involve introducing a levy on property value or applying capital gains tax on the sale of luxurious homes. Reeves is also anticipated to unveil a “mansion tax” imposing capital gains tax on the most valuable properties.
The concept of establishing additional council tax bands for England’s priciest properties was initially explored by former Conservative Chancellor George Osborne in 2012. Ruth Curtice from the Resolution Foundation suggested a supercharged council tax for high-value properties as a means to tax wealth effectively.
The aim of such changes would be to ensure fair contributions to public finances, especially from the wealthiest homeowners. The current council tax system in England categorizes properties into bands A to H based on their value.
