Nicolas Kicker decided to withdraw from his match against Gustavo Heide during the quarter-finals of an ATP Challenger Tour event in Florianopolis, Brazil. Kicker, who was already down a set at 2-6 and trailing 1-5 in the second set, opted to concede while facing match point.
The 33-year-old, a former world No.78, holds the unfortunate record of being the highest-ranked tennis player ever found guilty of match-fixing. In 2018, he received a six-year ban for manipulating the outcomes of two Challenger tournament matches in 2015. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) later reduced his suspension by four months due to his cooperation in their educational initiatives.
Kicker contributed to an instructional video for the ITIA, where he reflected on his past actions and warned other players about the repercussions of involvement in corruption. He expressed regret over jeopardizing his promising career due to one mistake in 2015.
Admitting his reliance on parental support for his tennis career, Kicker recounted a deceptive offer from individuals on Facebook who initially appeared as potential sponsors but later revealed themselves as a group of gamblers seeking to influence match results.
Despite acknowledging the gravity of his actions, Kicker still grapples with the aftermath of tarnishing his reputation within the tennis community.
