Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has criticized Reform MP Sarah Pochin over her recent remarks on race. Pochin, a close ally of Nigel Farage, faced backlash after expressing frustration at the presence of Black and Asian individuals in media. Mahmood, addressing a gathering in Westminster, humorously referenced Pochin’s comments, joking about being both Home Secretary and a frequent presence in the ads Pochin watches.
The controversy has led to 35 MPs calling for an investigation into Pochin’s conduct by Parliament’s standards chief. While Farage condemned Pochin’s statements as “ugly,” he has refrained from expelling her from the party. The Runcorn and Helsby MP’s comments, made during a TalkTV phone-in, have sparked further criticism, with Labour MP Dawn Butler urging an investigation into the matter, labeling the remarks as racist.
In response, Reform UK leader Farage expressed dissatisfaction with Pochin’s words but defended her, stating that he did not believe her intent was racist. Despite facing pressure to take action against Pochin, Farage emphasized that her comments were ill-phrased and not reflective of racist intentions.
The situation has prompted calls for upholding integrity and respect in public life, with demands for a thorough investigation to ensure inclusivity and diversity in British politics.
