Israel’s military has announced the reinstatement of the Gaza ceasefire following intense overnight airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of at least 104 Palestinians, with nearly half of them being children.
Amid concerns that 46 children lost their lives in the attacks, which were triggered by militants targeting Israeli troops and killing a soldier who also held US citizenship, the ceasefire established on October 10 faced a significant setback.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initiated the resumption of hostilities, accusing Hamas of breaching the ceasefire by releasing partial remains believed to be of a previously abducted individual.
The escalation was further fueled by the fatal shooting of an Israeli soldier during a confrontation in Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza.
The recent events have raised doubts about the stability of the fragile Gaza ceasefire, with over 100 Palestinians killed in response to the death of an Israeli soldier within the territory. Hamas, capable of inciting a strong Israeli retaliation, has been under pressure after releasing the remaining hostages back to Israel.
Despite denying involvement in the sniper attack, Hamas faces allegations of surreptitiously including remains of a released hostage in a body-release agreement.
