Morgan Geyser, known for the ‘Slender Man’ knife attack, was apprehended after reportedly cutting off her electronic monitoring device and disappearing from her group residence. She was found late Sunday night at a truck stop in Posen, Illinois, following a 24-hour search across state borders. The police apprehended her and another individual after they arrived in the area by bus. Posen is located about 25 minutes south of Chicago.
The arrest occurred after reports that Geyser was last seen in Madison with an adult companion. Surveillance footage released by the police showed her inside a public building, leading to numerous tips as the search intensified.
Authorities in Posen disclosed that the duo was discovered at a truck stop and detained without any issues. Both individuals were taken into custody while investigators looked into how Geyser removed her Department of Corrections tag and left her residence.
The disappearance was reported on Sunday morning, prompting a swift response from local and state law enforcement agencies.
Prior to her capture, Geyser’s mother, Angie, made a public plea for her daughter to turn herself in. Geyser’s attorney, Tony Cotton, also advised her to surrender, emphasizing that it was in her best interest.
In March, Geyser was released to supervised care after a court ruling deemed her suitable for community placement. She was mandated to wear an electronic bracelet, which she allegedly removed before her disappearance.
Geyser, along with her childhood friend Anissa Weier, were involved in the 2014 incident where they lured a classmate into the woods and Geyser stabbed the victim multiple times. The attack was based on a fictional online character, ‘Slender Man.’
The victim, Payton Leutner, survived the attack and garnered global attention, sparking discussions on online influence and mental health in children.
Initially charged as adults, Geyser and Weier were later found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect and were placed in psychiatric care. Geyser was sentenced to up to 40 years in an institution.
Concerns were raised about Geyser’s behavior earlier this year, leading to her disappearance and subsequent apprehension in Illinois.
The family of the victim, Payton Leutner, confirmed they were cooperating with law enforcement and expressed gratitude for the support received during this challenging time.
Leutner, now an adult, has shown resilience in her recovery process and acceptance of the scars from the attack.
Authorities are investigating Geyser’s escape, her route, and potential legal repercussions following the incident.
