BT has issued a crucial update regarding landline services, signaling an impending shift away from the traditional copper cables that have served for over a century. The transition to new digital services utilizing internet-based calling is set to occur by January 31, 2027, prompting millions of users to make the switch.
The switch is deemed necessary by BT and other companies due to the outdated, overburdened, and unreliable nature of the current copper system, which no longer meets modern connectivity requirements. BT’s Digital Voice system represents the latest upgrade, offering enhanced stability, clearer audio, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening features to combat scams and unwanted solicitations.
While over three million UK households have already migrated to Digital Voice, many more are yet to make the transition. BT emphasizes the importance of acting promptly, warning that failure to heed messages from service providers could result in disruptions to phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches.
To facilitate the switch, BT assures customers that most existing handsets are compatible with digital landlines, enabling users to retain their current phone numbers without any additional costs. The process typically involves connecting the home phone to the broadband hub instead of the traditional wall socket, with the option to seek assistance from the provider or arrange an engineer visit if needed.
Customers with specific needs, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, are advised to notify their provider promptly to ensure appropriate support arrangements. It is recommended for all users to verify their readiness for the transition to digital services before the retirement of the copper network.
Allison Kirkby, BT Group Chief Executive, stresses the significance of upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure to provide reliable and secure connectivity for all. BT’s substantial investments in infrastructure aim to foster growth and opportunities by connecting individuals, businesses, and communities to robust digital networks.
