Thailand Mourns: Former Queen Sirikit Dies at 93

Published:

A cherished member of a Royal family has passed away at 93 due to a severe blood infection.

The former Queen of Thailand, Sirikit, who was the mother of the current king, King Vajiralongkorn, died on October 24. She was not only the mother of the reigning king but also the wife of Thailand’s longest-serving monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Their marriage lasted an impressive 66 years, making them one of the longest-married Royal couples in history, similar to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

The news of her passing has deeply affected the nation, with the country mourning the loss of their beloved queen.

In a statement from the Thai Royal family, it was confirmed that Sirikit had passed away, causing shock across the nation due to the monarchy’s widespread popularity. Portraits of Sirikit can be seen in homes and public buildings throughout the country, as the monarchy is viewed as having a semi-divine right to rule.

According to Al Arabiya, the palace revealed that Queen Sirikit had been battling various illnesses since her hospitalization in 2019. This included a blood infection diagnosed by doctors earlier this month, leading to her passing at the age of 93 at Chulalongkorn Hospital.

During her 66-year reign as queen, Sirikit was a prominent figure in Thai fashion and dedicated herself to charitable endeavors supporting the underprivileged and disadvantaged.

She was often compared to former US First Lady Jackie Kennedy and Britain’s Princess Diana by Western media outlets, drawing parallels for her grace and influence.

The citizens of Thailand are devastated by the news, with many expressing concerns about how the nation will move forward without her guidance.

Housekeeper Sasis Putthasit shared that Sirikit’s passing has deeply impacted the Thai people, describing her as a motherly figure who will be greatly missed.

Following Queen Sirikit’s demise, King Vajiralongkorn has decreed a year of national mourning for the Royal family.

Television presenters nationwide have been instructed to wear black attire during news broadcasts as a mark of respect for the late queen.

Queen Sirikit rose to prominence when her husband became king in 1946, guiding the country through the aftermath of World War 2.

She remained an active public figure until her husband’s reign ended in 2016, after which she led a more private life due to health issues in her later years.
