“£10 Million Boost for Mosque Security Amid Rising Hate Crimes”

Published:

Labour leader Keir Starmer has unveiled fresh funding for mosque security following his visit to a mosque that was recently targeted in a suspected arson incident. The government has earmarked approximately £10 million to enhance security at mosques and Muslim faith centers in order to safeguard them against hate crimes and attacks. This financial injection will support the implementation of security measures such as CCTV systems, alarm installations, secure fencing, and security personnel.

The announcement coincided with Starmer’s visit to Peacehaven mosque in East Sussex, which was damaged by a fire on October 4th, resulting in no injuries but causing damage to the mosque’s front entrance and a vehicle. Sussex Police disclosed that three individuals have been apprehended on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life in connection to the incident.

Starmer expressed his sentiments, stating, “Britain takes pride in its tolerance and inclusivity. Any assault on a community is an assault on our nation and the principles we stand for. This funding will offer Muslim communities the necessary protection to live securely and peacefully.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to creating a safer environment for all, including safeguarding places of worship from individuals aiming to sow discord through hate and violence.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood commended the funding initiative, denouncing the attack on Peacehaven Mosque as a heinous crime that could have had more severe consequences. Mahmood highlighted the fundamental right of individuals to practice their chosen faith without fear or discrimination, emphasizing the need to unite against divisive forces promoting violence and intolerance.

Akeela Ahmed, CEO of the British Muslim Trust, welcomed the funding, emphasizing the importance of religious freedom as a fundamental British value. She underscored the right of every individual to live peacefully without the threat of intimidation or fear due to their identity, expressing concern for the escalating instances of vandalism, arson, and abuse targeting Muslim communities and their places of worship.
