Justice Secretary Demands Jenrick Apology for Judge Criticism

Published:

The Justice Secretary has called for Robert Jenrick to apologize for his critical remarks about judges. This comes after David Lammy raised concerns over the safety of legal professionals facing threats due to the hostile environment fueled by Tory criticisms.

Jenrick’s campaign against what he labels as “activist” judges, threatening to dismiss 35 of them, and asserting a widespread corruption within the judiciary has drawn significant backlash. He has also advocated for the abolition of the Sentencing Council, Judicial Appointments Commission, and immigration tribunals.

Deputy Prime Minister, in a recent event with ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, urged Jenrick to retract his statements, emphasizing the importance of upholding the independence of the judiciary and ensuring the safety of judges in their daily duties.

Legal bodies, including the Bar Council of England and Wales, have expressed grave concerns over the escalating hostility towards lawyers and the judiciary. They highlighted the risks posed by vilifying legal professionals for simply carrying out their responsibilities.

Jenrick faced criticism for his video accusing over 30 immigration judges of having ties to “open borders charities.” Refugee support organizations, Freedom from Torture and Care4Calais, condemned his remarks, emphasizing the mounting threats they face from extremist groups.

The ongoing discourse underscores the need to maintain a respectful environment for legal professionals to carry out their duties with integrity and independence.
