The renowned queen of pop is making a triumphant return to claim her throne. In a surprising turn of events, Madonna has secured the top spot on the list of MTV Video Music Awards nominations this year, surpassing even Taylor Swift. This marks the third time in Madonna’s illustrious career that she has been the most nominated artist at the VMAs.
With a total of 11 nominations for the upcoming ceremony, Madonna’s recognition is attributed to her chart-topping album “Confessions II” and its accompanying film. Taylor Swift, who holds the record for the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, follows closely behind with nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.” Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande are next in line with seven nominations each.
Madonna has previously dominated the VMAs nominations in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. However, her most iconic moment at the awards remains her groundbreaking performance at the inaugural 1984 ceremony, where she shocked audiences by singing “Like a Virgin” while wearing a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle, pushing the boundaries of cable television.
Among Madonna’s nominations this year are video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Carpenter. The highly coveted video of the year award will see Madonna’s “Confessions” competing against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
For this year’s VMAs, public voting is open for 13 categories. The winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of the ceremony on September 27, airing on CBS, MTV, and streaming on Paramount+.
