“Gangs Target Armored Vehicle, Four Soldiers Missing in Haiti”

Published:

A violent incident occurred in Haiti over the weekend as gangs targeted an armored vehicle, resulting in four El Salvadoran soldiers missing. This attack took place in Croix-des-Bouquets, a neighborhood in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, which is now under the control of dangerous gangs.

The armed forces of El Salvador reported that the soldiers were ambushed while returning to their base, with their vehicle being attacked and set on fire using explosives. Fortunately, the soldiers managed to escape the burning vehicle. Efforts are underway to locate and establish contact with the missing soldiers, with international support being sought for assistance.

Subsequent attempts to reach the area were hindered by ongoing intense fighting, according to the Salvadoran military. The use of foreign-made weapons and ammunition by the gangs in Haiti poses a continuing challenge as these illicit supplies find their way into the country, as highlighted by Haiti’s deputy representative to the UN.

Gang violence has resulted in the displacement of approximately 1.5 million people within Haiti, with a significant number of fatalities and injuries recorded, along with numerous kidnappings, according to the UN’s data. In response to this incident, Mike Waltz, the U.S. ambassador to the UN, denounced the attack, expressing determination to ensure the safe return of the missing soldiers.

The gang suppression force is closely monitoring the situation and advising residents in the affected area to remain indoors. Recent attacks against the force have escalated, including reprisal killings in various regions, emphasizing the complexities of security challenges in Haiti.

Preparations for Haiti’s upcoming general election are underway, amidst the backdrop of gang control in Port-au-Prince. The gang suppression force, comprising troops from various countries, is actively engaged in efforts to combat gang influence and restore stability in the region.

As the investigation into the attack on Salvadoran troops continues, Haiti remains on the brink of political change, with an increasing number of political groups participating in the electoral process. The presence and influence of gangs in Haiti’s political landscape add additional layers of complexity to the country’s security and governance.
