Former Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios disclosed on Wednesday that he tested positive for cocaine, resulting in his provisional suspension from the sport of tennis. The 31-year-old Australian, who was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the 2022 singles final, has participated in only two Grand Slam tournaments since then. Currently ranked 919th due to a string of injuries, Kyrgios shared the specifics of his situation on social media.
“Following a drug test in Mallorca, I recently failed after testing positive for cocaine,” Kyrgios stated, referencing an event in June of lower stature. “I have made a significant error and accept full responsibility for my actions.” Cocaine is classified as a prohibited substance in competitive sports, with varying penalties when detected outside of official competitions.
Kyrgios has previously spoken about his mental health challenges, exacerbated by alcohol and drug consumption. He expressed the difficulties he has faced in accepting the potential conclusion of his career following two years of injury setbacks. “There have been occasions where I have felt powerless and isolated. However, none of this justifies my actions,” he acknowledged.
Earlier last month, Kyrgios received a wild card to compete in doubles at Wimbledon but was eliminated in the opening round alongside partner Alexander Bublik. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) will handle the case, confirming that Kyrgios’ sample was collected on June 22, with the positive test confirmed on July 17, subsequent to his Wimbledon appearance.
A mandatory provisional suspension was enforced on August 4 and has not been challenged by Kyrgios, as per the ITIA.
