Jasmin Esquivel made an unexpected journey from Saskatchewan to British Columbia earlier this summer, not knowing her life was on the verge of a significant change. Within just a few days, Esquivel found herself being crowned Mrs. Canada Universe 2026 at the Bell Performing Arts Centre in Surrey, B.C.
Reflecting on her win, Esquivel expressed her surprise, especially considering her age and the fact that she is a mother of five. She shared with CBC Saskatchewan, “I didn’t expect it, after many years, after having five kids. I realize that one day your dream is going to come true.”
Having last competed in a pageant at the age of 17, Esquivel felt a newfound spark within her when the opportunity to participate in this competition at 43 presented itself. She attributed this feeling to a deep-rooted memory and passion she believes runs in her blood.
Residing in Prince Albert, Sask., alongside her children, Esquivel credited her family for their unwavering support and inspiration throughout her journey, despite her initial doubts about entering the contest. Her eldest daughter, Brianna Balajonda, mentioned being initially shocked but later amazed and inspired by her mother’s dedication and perseverance.
Esquivel emphasized that her children are her driving force, not only serving as her motivation but also standing by her side behind the scenes during the pageant. She highlighted the importance of community involvement, sharing that she and her family engaged in various volunteering activities, including assisting in care homes and organizing sports events like fun runs, leading up to the competition.
Looking ahead, Esquivel aims to encourage every woman and mother to pursue their dreams, emphasizing that there is always a perfect time to follow one’s aspirations. She stressed, “There’s always a perfect time for you. So after having this crown and this title, I just realized that you can still continue your dreams. Having kids doesn’t mean we will stop.”
Esquivel, along with her family, will represent Canada and her hometown in Sri Lanka at the Mrs. Universe 2026 pageant in October. Her children eagerly expressed their unwavering support and love, eagerly awaiting the opportunity to cheer her on at the next stage of her journey.
