Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Canada for a crucial visit amidst ongoing deadly airstrikes in Ukraine. Zelenskyy, accompanied by his wife Olena Zelenska, is scheduled to participate in various events in Calgary, Toronto, and North Bay from Wednesday to Friday, according to a statement from Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Upon his arrival in Calgary on Wednesday night, Zelenskyy was greeted at the airport by officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, before being escorted to his destination in a black SUV. Carney and Zelenskyy are slated to meet in Calgary on Thursday morning, followed by Zelenskyy’s address at a cabinet meeting in Banff, Alta.
The visit aims to highlight Canada’s steadfast support for Ukraine and strengthen cooperation in defense, economy, and energy sectors. It will also focus on the human toll of the conflict with Russia and foster the enduring people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Zelenskyy announced his trip to Canada via social media, emphasizing the need for a robust international response to Russia’s escalating attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Carney previously visited Kyiv last year, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to Ukraine and pledging an additional $2 billion in military assistance.
In an unexpected turn of events, Zelenskyy’s flight from Moldova to Norway was delayed due to drone activity in Moldova’s airspace, prompting authorities to temporarily close the airspace. Meanwhile, as Ukraine grapples with devastating airstrikes, European leaders warn of Russia’s expanding aggression in the region.
Before departing for Canada, Zelenskyy criticized the international community for its muted response to Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, stressing the urgency for a unified stance against Moscow’s aggression. Carney also reiterated his firm message to Putin, urging Russia to cease hostilities in Ukraine and return control of the country to its people.
