Five-time Tour de France winner and top contender Tadej Pogacar withdrew from the Spanish Vuelta following a crash on the eighth stage. Despite holding a significant lead, the Slovenian cyclist was involved in an incident around 33 kilometers from the finish line. Despite attempting to resume cycling, he ultimately had to abandon the race and seek medical attention.
Pogacar, aiming to achieve victory in all three Grand Tour races, had previously triumphed in the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia. Suffering injuries to his head, left arm, and shoulder, Pogacar fell during the race after swerving to avoid an obstacle on the road. The team manager confirmed that he required stitches for his injuries.
Acknowledging the unpredictability of cycling, the team manager mentioned that Pogacar initially wanted to continue but had to stop due to the pain. The incident resulted in Enric Mas of Movistar taking the lead in the race. Mas expressed mixed feelings about receiving the leader’s jersey under such circumstances and expressed support for Pogacar’s recovery.
Pogacar’s absence paved the way for Mas to take the race lead, with Felix Gall and Primoz Roglic following closely behind. With the race set to conclude in Granada on September 13, the outcome remains uncertain as competitors adapt to the sudden change in leadership.
