“Trump Warns Oman as Iran Plans Strait of Hormuz Strategy”

Published:

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again issued a warning to Oman while Iran revealed it is collaborating with the Gulf Arab nation on a strategy to oversee maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial demand from the United States. As the 60-day negotiation period to reach a peace agreement between the U.S. and Iran neared its end, both parties appeared to remain at odds without any mention of an extension.

In recent developments on Monday in the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran, Iran announced it had made progress with Oman on a plan for ships to navigate the Strait of Hormuz, which lies between the two countries. The two nations are currently finalizing the details for a joint statement following an understanding on the transit route map, as revealed by Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei in Tehran.

The agreement is anticipated to allow ships to pass through the strait without incurring fees or tolls during an interim period, with vessels entering close to Iran and exiting near Oman. This deal is crucial for the U.S. to lift its blockade on Iranian ports, imposed after the strait was shut down by Iran following attacks by Israel and the U.S. in late February.

President Trump previously made a threat against Oman, stating in an interview with Fox News that the U.S. would take military action against Oman if it obstructed their plans. This is not the first time Trump has issued warnings to Oman, as he had previously mentioned potential consequences if Oman did not comply.

Meanwhile, Houthi rebels in Yemen, backed by Iran, claimed responsibility for an attack on a ship and four military boats in the Red Sea near Mokha, close to the Bab el-Mandab Strait. The rebels alleged that the vessels belonged to Saudi Arabia, although this claim could not be independently verified.

In another incident, drone attacks targeted two officials in northern Iraq, with the regional counterterrorism service attributing the attacks to the border with Iran. The attacks, which included one targeting the office of Masrour Barzani, the prime minister of Iraq’s northern Kurdish region, were condemned for their potential to destabilize the region.

As tensions persist between the U.S. and Iran, with ongoing military engagements and diplomatic efforts, the situation remains complex and fragile, with various regional actors involved in escalating confrontations.
