“Toxic Algae in Air: Health Risks Under Study”

Residents near Lake Erie are well aware of the risks associated with blue-green algae blooms. These harmful blooms can lead to skin irritation, throat discomfort, and eye redness upon contact. However, researchers are now investigating the impact of airborne algae particles on human health, particularly when inhaled.

Led by David Kennedy, a professor at the University of Toledo, the Great Lakes Center for Freshwater and Human Health is studying the effects of airborne algae toxins. The ongoing study aims to understand the health implications of inhaling these toxins, especially for individuals who spend time near the western basin of Lake Erie.

The research, known as the Great Lakes Aerosol Monitoring Research Study (GLAMR), involves tracking individuals living, working, or recreating in the area. The study has not yet undergone peer review but has made progress in recruiting participants and collecting samples for analysis.

Participants are providing various samples, including blood, urine, breath, and cell samples, to help researchers assess the long-term health effects of airborne algae exposure. Scientists are particularly interested in understanding how algae toxins can be aerosolized and travel through the air, potentially affecting coastal communities as well.

While the study is ongoing and long-term data is still being gathered, experts emphasize that breathing in algae toxins can have more severe effects than ingesting them. The research aims to provide communities with valuable insights on the risks associated with airborne algae exposure and how to mitigate these risks effectively.
