Cristiano Ronaldo has indicated that the current Saudi Pro League season could mark the conclusion of his illustrious football career. The 41-year-old star’s contract with Al-Nassr in Riyadh, which was inked in December 2022, is set to expire in June next year, with slim chances of another extension, as per his interview with Vogue magazine.
“I believe this will be my final year in football, and I aim to leave behind a remarkable legacy,” Ronaldo expressed. The prolific Portugal forward, boasting 976 career goals, recently tied the knot with his longtime partner, Georgina Rodriguez.
“My future plans are well laid out,” he shared. “I have numerous pursuits to keep me occupied, as filling the void left by football necessitates diversifying one’s activities. In addition to exploring new avenues, I plan to indulge in more leisure activities, such as traveling, playing padel – a sport I thoroughly enjoy, and savoring the fruits of my labor, which we have collectively earned. It’s been a journey of 25 years filled with immense dedication.”
Ronaldo, currently in his 25th professional season during the 2026-27 SPL campaign, has amassed an impressive collection of accolades, including five Ballon d’Or titles and five UEFA Champions League triumphs. His stellar performance last season, notching 28 league goals, propelled Al-Nassr to clinch the Saudi Arabian championship in May, marking his first trophy since joining the club and the first league victory for Al-Nassr since 2019.
Following his recent wedding, Ronaldo was absent from Al-Nassr’s season opener as they secured a 3-0 victory over Al-Fateh. Despite his absence on the pitch, coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged Ronaldo’s continual support, stating, “Cristiano is always with us, and his presence is felt.” Ronaldo is expected to feature in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah, with Postecoglou emphasizing the importance of recovery given the tight schedule.
Ronaldo’s announcement coincided with Lionel Messi’s revelation that he is contemplating retirement after his father’s passing. “I am uncertain about my future path,” Messi, aged 39, admitted. “Football used to be my sole focus, but now I am unsure if I will continue for much longer.”
