Aroha DeForest has resided in her Nepean residence since the 1990s and initially acquired sandbags following a flood incident in 2023. Following the unprecedented rainstorm on Canada Day, she mentioned that the sandbags have become a permanent feature in her laneway.
The recent rainfall of 23.5 millimetres on Monday saturated various parts of the city, leading to a second round of flooding in a little over a month. This recurrence has left residents, including DeForest, feeling anxious and on high alert.
DeForest expressed the collective anxiety felt by her neighbors in the west end of Ottawa, describing it as akin to post-traumatic stress disorder when anticipating severe weather alerts. She highlighted the constant vigilance and cautiousness among residents, who have been hesitant to leave their homes or go on vacations simultaneously to ensure someone is always present to monitor the situation.
The ongoing uncertainty surrounding potential flooding has instilled fear within the community, with residents like DeForest emphasizing the unease of not knowing if their homes or neighbors’ homes will be affected by the forecasted rain.
In response to the July 1 flooding that impacted several neighborhoods, including College, Bay, and Knoxdale-Merivale wards, city officials are assessing the aftermath and considering ways to enhance their response to future extreme weather events. Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine, after engaging with affected residents, echoed their appeals for additional assistance and emphasized the need for further support in the ongoing recovery process.
Wesley Bova, another Nepean resident, reflected on the recent storm’s lesser impact compared to the previous catastrophic event but highlighted the persistent concerns within the community. The looming threat of potential flooding has resulted in a sense of dread among residents, with the memory of the previous flood prompting precautionary measures and heightened anxiety whenever dark clouds gather.
