Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild caused an upset by defeating the top-ranked Ottawa Rapid 4-3 in a Northern Super League match at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson broke the deadlock with a goal in the 15th minute for the home team, followed by Thurton doubling the lead 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton secured her second goal just before the break, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, whose record now stands at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, ending their 10-match unbeaten streak.
Despite controlling 54% of possession, the Rapid were outshot by the Wild, with a total of 16 shots to 13 (9 on target to 6).
The Wild earned six corners compared to Ottawa’s one, with the Rapid receiving one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored twice for the Vancouver Rise, with her second goal coming in stoppage time to secure a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had given the Tides a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute.
The Rise dominated possession with 56%, outshooting the Tides 18-13 (6 on target to 4).
Halifax took four of the six corners in the game, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
