Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances at the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly and later clinched a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, marking her fourth and fifth medals of the competition. In the 100m butterfly, the 26-year-old from Kelowna set a personal best time of 56.71 seconds, coming in second behind American Gretchen Walsh. Australian Alexandria Perkins captured the bronze with a time of 56.75.
Ruck expressed her joy after the 100m butterfly event, highlighting her preparation and trust in her performance. McIntosh, on the other hand, faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final of the women’s 400m freestyle despite winning the B final. She took responsibility for the misjudgment and expressed frustration with her performance.
In the men’s competition, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, who also won the men’s 100m backstroke earlier, acknowledged the significance of their podium finishes. Japan’s Yumeki Kojima claimed the gold in the event.
Ruck continued her success by guiding Canada to a bronze medal in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. The Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed a podium finish, coming in fourth. The U.S. and Australia dominated the relay events, with the U.S. women and men securing gold medals.
McIntosh vowed to learn from her setbacks and refocus for future competitions. Ruck’s exceptional performances contributed significantly to Canada’s success at the championships, showcasing the talent and determination of Canadian swimmers on the international stage.
