Golfer David McDonald, an 85-year-old resident of Fall River, N.S., recently achieved a remarkable feat by shooting an even-par 72 at the challenging Ashburn Golf Club course. Known for its long layout and fast, expansive greens, the course presented a tough test for McDonald.
Expressing his excitement, McDonald mentioned that shooting a 72 was a special accomplishment for him, as it had been a while since he last achieved that score. Playing from the silver tees, which measure nearly 5,800 yards, McDonald still covers a considerable distance while navigating the course.
Shooting one’s age in golf is considered a significant achievement, and McDonald surpassed this milestone by an impressive 13 strokes. Despite experiencing some heart issues in the past, McDonald’s physical strength in his knees, hips, and legs allows him to continue playing actively.
A friend of McDonald, Peter Stirling, praised his dedication to the game, highlighting McDonald’s preference for walking the course rather than using a cart. McDonald’s consistency in hitting straight drives and crucial putts contributes to his ability to score well consistently, usually in the high 70s.
McDonald’s golf journey began when he was 30 and stationed in Cape Breton with the air force. He quickly excelled in the sport, winning three national titles in military tournaments. Following his retirement from the military in 1995, McDonald settled near the Ashburn Golf Club, where he continued to showcase his golfing prowess.
With 17 career holes-in-one to his name, McDonald remains passionate about the game and attributes his longevity to healthy habits and regular exercise. Refusing to slow down, McDonald continues to inspire others with his dedication to golf and his vibrant approach to life.
