Tennessee plans to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of the legendary country music icon Dolly Parton, following her recent passing at the age of 80 in the heart of country music, Nashville. This decision stems from a social media campaign led by fans advocating for the airport to bear Parton’s name as a tribute. Governor Bill Lee engaged with Parton’s team to discuss this move, emphasizing the singer’s significant impact on the state’s culture.
“Dolly Parton’s remarkable life is deeply embedded in the essence of our state,” stated Governor Lee. “Given that Nashville International Airport serves as a gateway where Tennessee embraces visitors from across the globe, it is only fitting that the airport reflects the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness as our state’s beloved figure.”
The proposal to rename the airport will be reviewed at a meeting on September 17, addressing the current Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s naming policy which typically requires a two-year waiting period after an individual’s passing before naming any property after them. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development is in full support of this initiative, recognizing Parton as a key figure in promoting Tennessee’s tourism.
“Dolly Parton has been a pivotal figure in Tennessee tourism, acting as a leading lady and a prominent ambassador,” noted Tourism Development Commissioner Mark Ezell. “Even before tourists arrive, countless travelers are acquainted with our state’s music, landscapes, and hospitality through her influence. There couldn’t be a more fitting name for the airport, where countless journeys throughout Tennessee commence.”
Dolly Parton, born on January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, and raised in a modest cabin in Locust Ridge, started her musical journey at a young age by performing at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville at the age of 13. Throughout her career, she produced timeless hits such as “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” solidifying her status as one of the top-selling female artists globally with over 100 million records sold and 11 Grammy Awards, including a prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
