“Residents near Quilpituk Creek Wildfire Allowed to Return Home”

Published:

Residents of approximately 2,400 households near the Quilpituk Creek wildfire area in Central Okanagan have received encouraging news as they were given the green light to return home following the downgrade of evacuation orders to alerts. The Regional District spokesperson, Kari O’Rourke, expressed relief at the positive development, emphasizing the importance of preparedness for potential challenges upon re-entry.

The B.C. Wildfire Service reported that the fire has been contained and is not expected to spread further. Despite the fire burning for over two weeks and covering an area of more than 1,200 hectares, no structures have been damaged. However, concerns persist regarding the presence of ash, soot, smoke residue, and debris on properties and roads.

James Britton, a resident at La Casa Lakeside Resort, shared his experience of returning home after multiple evacuations in recent years. He highlighted the need for cleanup due to ash accumulation but also acknowledged the community effort in supporting each other during the crisis. The continuous threat of wildfires has prompted Britton to reflect on the sustainability of living in the area, despite the sense of belonging it offers.

In a separate development, evacuation orders have been lifted for Peachland residents, allowing them to return home, while similar measures are being implemented in other affected regions. Authorities have emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant as evacuation alerts are still in effect, underscoring the need for readiness to evacuate if the situation worsens.
