Hi, this is Emily. I’m always fascinated by the intense heat experienced in subway stations. The concept of using this heat for cooling purposes elsewhere is intriguing. I’ve explored how waste heat from various sources like nuclear power plants, paper mills, and sewers can be utilized for heating buildings. So, why not apply this idea to subways?
This week’s highlights include:
– Canadian technology targeting to cool hot subways in New York City

– Understanding ‘wishcycling’ and the crackdown on it in certain municipalities
Underground subway stations are becoming increasingly hot, prompting complaints from commuters worldwide, including cities like Montreal, where temperatures have soared to 38°C. In response, a Canadian company is trialing an energy-efficient cooling solution in New York City’s subway system.
Cascara Energy, based in Toronto, in partnership with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York City, is implementing a radiant cooling system in the ceiling arches of the East Broadway station. Expected to be operational by the end of August, this pilot project will run until the end of 2027. The system utilizes loops of chilled water-filled pipes to absorb heat and enhance passenger comfort without the need for fans, making it more compact and efficient compared to traditional air conditioning. Additionally, it is anticipated that the recovered heat could be repurposed for other applications.
The project aims to address the heat accumulation in subway systems caused by various sources like electronics, passenger heat, and train operations. The innovative system by Cascara Energy intends to capture excess heat, enhance passenger comfort, and potentially recover and reuse the heat for heating water and buildings, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional heating methods.
Notably, the London Underground has already successfully implemented a heat recycling system, serving as a model for potential future applications in other transit systems globally. Cascara Energy’s CEO, Robert Croghan, expressed optimism about the project’s success in New York and its potential to inspire interest from other transit authorities.
In conclusion, the New York pilot project represents a step towards sustainable and energy-efficient cooling solutions for subway systems, with the potential for broader applications in the future.
