Sixteen teams, divided into four groups each, are participating in the preliminary rounds of the men’s and women’s tournaments in Germany. The top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stage. The ultimate medal matches will determine the world champions and the teams securing Olympic berths.
Canada’s women’s team, ranked fourth globally, will face Panama, Brazil, and Japan in the group stage. On the men’s side, Canada, ranked 10th, will compete against Austria, Japan, and received a default win from Nigeria. The U.S., aiming for their sixth consecutive world title, is the top-ranked team.
The addition of flag football to the 2028 Olympics sparked speculation about potential NFL and CFL stars participating for the U.S. and Canada. However, a recent exhibition tournament showcased the distinct skills required for flag football, differentiating it from traditional tackle football.
