Last night at Scarborough Beach, police and paramedics responded to an incident where two teenagers, both 18, were injured by exploding fireworks. One of them sustained hand injuries, while the other suffered injuries to the face, according to North Yorkshire Police. Both individuals were swiftly transported to James’ Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough by an Air Ambulance.
The fireworks display that led to the injuries was reportedly unauthorized. Witnesses mentioned the challenges emergency services faced due to road congestion, emphasizing the need for better traffic management during such events.
Social media images depicted youths near a bonfire close to the RNLI station, with a video showing a person holding a sparking firework. The footage captured the moment the firework exploded, causing injuries to the individual. Onlookers were heard encouraging the person as the accident unfolded.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed receiving an emergency call at 7:13 pm reporting the incident at Scarborough Beach. Multiple ambulance units, including the air ambulance, were dispatched to the site, and subsequently, two patients were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Expressing concern about the chaotic situation, another witness described Scarborough as resembling a “warzone” that prompted families to seek refuge away from the noise. Criticism was directed at local authorities to take action and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Following the incident, the Scarborough Moan Facebook page, with a significant following, announced that children had been seriously injured by fireworks. Comments were disabled to prevent the spread of misinformation during a sensitive time when children were involved.
North Yorkshire Police are now seeking witnesses to provide information regarding the incident. They reported that two 18-year-olds sustained injuries from fireworks, with ongoing investigations into the matter. Authorities urge anyone present at the scene to come forward if they have not already spoken to the police.
