A former teacher has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for engaging in ‘shocking’ sexual abuse of three students at a Catholic school in Southampton over a span of five years. Leo Norman, described as predatory, targeted teenage girls at St Anne’s School while teaching English and media from September 2014 to June 2019. He admitted to three counts of sexual activity with a minor in a position of trust at Portsmouth Crown Court.
In addition to the jail term, the 46-year-old from Southampton received a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and must register as a sex offender for a decade. The court emphasized that Norman had abused his authority and breached the trust placed in him by the victims.
According to a Crown Prosecution Service spokesperson, Norman manipulated the girls by giving them special attention, compliments, and showing interest in their personal lives to gain their trust before engaging in inappropriate sexual contact. The victims reported feeling confused and uncomfortable due to his advances.
Melissa Garner from the CPS Organised Child Sexual Abuse Unit expressed concern over Norman’s repeated exploitation of his position to target vulnerable individuals. She praised the victims for their bravery in coming forward and supporting the prosecution efforts.
Detective Constable Laura Hardie of Hampshire Constabulary described the case as disturbing, highlighting Norman’s misuse of his position to sexually exploit three teenage girls over several years. She commended the courage of the women for sharing their experiences, leading to Norman’s conviction.
During the court proceedings, the victims revealed that Norman had expressed his desire for sexual relations through poems, physical proximity, and flattering remarks. One student disclosed feeling like a ‘siren’ and being blamed for his inappropriate behavior.
