A man allegedly attempted to ignite his vehicle after driving it into a group of pedestrians and cyclists, causing injuries to at least 10 people, with two individuals in critical condition, on the French holiday island of Saint Pierre d´Oléron. The 35-year-old suspect was apprehended by police shortly after the incident and reportedly resisted arrest, resulting in the use of a Taser. Authorities found him trying to set fire to his car, which had gas canisters inside, and he was swiftly taken into custody.
The arrested man, who hails from a village near the site of the attack, has a history of misconduct related to substance abuse, as stated by the mayor of Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, Christophe Sueur. An attempted murder inquiry has been initiated by law enforcement following the troubling events.
French Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, disclosed initial information regarding the investigation, mentioning that the motorist struck pedestrians and cyclists in Saint Pierre d´Oléron and Dolus d’Oléron. He confirmed the arrest of the suspect and detailed the injuries sustained by the victims. The case is currently not being treated as a terrorist act.
The suspect, as described by Arnaud Laraize, the La Rochelle public prosecutor, is reported to have drug and alcohol dependencies along with psychiatric issues. Although witnesses heard the man utter “Allahu Akbar” during the incident, authorities are not treating it as a terrorism-related offense.
