Australia’s interim captain, Steve Smith, has broken his silence following a tense confrontation with England’s fast bowler, Jofra Archer, during the final session at the Gabba. The English team aimed to dismiss the Australians for under 64 runs, but Smith led his team to victory by hitting the winning runs for the second consecutive Test.
Smith entered the crease with Australia at 41-2 and swiftly guided his team to success by scoring an impressive 23 runs off just nine deliveries. He showcased his prowess by striking two massive sixes and two fours, dominating Archer who conceded 15 runs from only five balls.
The intense moment between Smith and Archer occurred during a heated over at the Gabba, where Archer, visibly frustrated after being hit for a boundary by Smith, engaged in a verbal exchange. However, Smith let his batting skills speak for him, smashing Archer for a six over deep fine leg and another boundary. The English bowlers were left rattled and bruised by the Australian onslaught.
In the following over, Smith sealed the victory with another six, extending Australia’s lead to 2-0 as they head into the next Test in Adelaide with a commanding position. When questioned about the on-field exchange with Archer, Smith mentioned, “That stays on the field. It was good banter. He’s a good competitor and comes hard at you so it was good fun.”
The frustration was evident in Archer’s performance as he struggled with the pink ball throughout the match. England’s bowling unit failed to deliver their best performance, unlike their impressive display on the first day in Perth, which now seems like a distant memory.
After Joe Root’s unbeaten 134 in the first innings, England set a target of 334 runs for Australia. However, the hosts comfortably chased down the total, amassing 511 runs with significant contributions from various players including Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Smith, Alex Carey, and Mitchell Starc.
Despite a promising start on a batting-friendly wicket, England ended day three trailing by 43 runs with six wickets down at 134-6. Ben Stokes and Will Jacks showed a late fight, but Australia eventually bowled out England for 241.
Travis Head and Weatherald provided a quick start to the chase before Smith took charge and aggressively attacked the bowlers. Reflecting on his performance, Smith expressed his decision to play attacking shots and finish the game swiftly due to the impending weather conditions.
With the series on the line, England must secure a win in Adelaide to keep their Ashes hopes alive, as Australia currently holds a 2-0 lead. The forthcoming third Test is scheduled to commence on December 17.
