British driver Lando Norris secured the Drivers’ Championship title by clinching third place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, becoming the 11th Brit to achieve this feat.
Heading into the race weekend, Norris led the World Championship with a 12-point advantage over Max Verstappen, the reigning champion. Norris’s teammate, Oscar Piastri, was also in contention, trailing Verstappen by just four points.
Despite missing out on a chance to win the championship in Qatar due to a strategic error by McLaren, Norris faced intense pressure in Abu Dhabi. His path to victory was clear: a podium finish would crown him world champion. Qualifying saw Norris outperform Piastri to secure the second spot on the grid behind Verstappen.
During the race, Norris faced stiff competition from Piastri, who made an impressive move to overtake him early on. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari also posed a challenge, keeping the pressure on Norris in the opening laps.
A strategic pit stop on lap 16 helped Norris maintain his position ahead of Leclerc. Verstappen’s teammate, Yuki Tsunoda, was penalized for his defensive maneuvers, allowing Norris to make crucial overtakes.
As the race progressed, Norris extended his lead over Leclerc while Piastri opted for a longer stint on his tires. Ultimately, Norris managed his advantage well, keeping Leclerc at bay and securing the championship with a composed drive to the finish line.
With this victory, Norris completed a remarkable seven-year journey in Formula 1, bringing British motorsport back to the pinnacle of success.
