Shabana Mahmood is preparing to unveil significant changes to the immigration regulations in the UK, taking inspiration from the policies in Denmark. The Home Secretary has reportedly sent officials to Denmark to study their stringent border controls and asylum policies, known for being some of the toughest in Europe.
Denmark’s approach, which includes stricter rules on family reunions and temporary stays for certain refugees, has led to a notable decrease in asylum applications to the lowest level in four decades. Additionally, Denmark has achieved a high rate of returning rejected asylum seekers, removing 95% of them successfully.
The proposal has sparked mixed reactions among Labour MPs, with some supporting the idea to counter Reform UK but others voicing concerns that it could push voters towards the Greens and Liberal Democrats. Shabana Mahmood aims to deter unauthorized entry into the UK while streamlining the process to deport individuals without a legal right to remain in the country. She is eager to meet with Rasmus Stoklund, Denmark’s immigration minister, to discuss further collaboration.
Rasmus Stoklund has likened Danish society to the peaceful hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings,” emphasizing the expectation for newcomers to contribute positively to the community. Labour MP Gareth Snell expressed openness to exploring changes that would bring fairness to an asylum system that lacks public trust.
However, Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome, a member of the party’s Socialist Campaign Group caucus, cautioned against adopting the Danish model, labeling it as aligned with far-right ideologies. Despite the ongoing discussions, recent Home Office figures revealed that 648 migrants arrived in Britain through the Channel on Friday, bringing the year’s total to 38,223.
