A young woman named Bella Culley, who is pregnant, is heading back to the UK today after being given approval to board a non-stop flight. The 19-year-old had been detained in Georgia on charges related to drug smuggling but was released recently due to compassionate reasons. She is accompanied by her mother, Lyanne Kennedy, on an easyJet flight scheduled to land at London Luton Airport at 7 pm. Culley, hailing from Billingham in Teesside, faced allegations of trying to smuggle marijuana and hashish in her luggage at Tbilisi international airport back in May.
Following her arrest, she spent several months in a prison in Georgia where she described facing harsh conditions such as cooking pasta in a kettle and using a makeshift toilet. Originally facing a two-year sentence, Culley’s term was shortened to five months and 25 days after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors and her defense team earlier this week. The decision to release her was influenced by her age and pregnancy status, as stated by her lawyer and the prosecution.
Officials mentioned that the decision to grant her early release was based on her cooperation, behavior, and nearing childbirth. Culley expressed relief upon leaving the court, stating that she did not anticipate being set free and was grateful for the news. When asked about her prison experience, she deferred to her mother, implying challenging conditions. She is now expected to return home in the North East after landing in Luton and being driven back.
