“Gordon Brown Urges Overturn of Two-Child Benefit Limit”

Published:

Gordon Brown has been a longstanding advocate for addressing child poverty. His efforts during his time in the previous Labour government to combat this issue are often cited as an example of the impact a Labour government can have. However, with approximately 4.5 million children living in poverty, the highest number in 60 years, it is understandable why the former Prime Minister feels compelled to address the issue.

In a heartfelt speech today, marking the 60th anniversary of the Child Poverty Action Group, he referred to child poverty as a “stain on the conscience of our nation.” Just ahead of the upcoming Budget, he called for the complete removal of the two-child benefit limit, a topic still under active discussion within the government.

While Gordon Brown was the main speaker, another prominent figure from the Labour Party, Angela Rayner, was present in the audience, receiving recognition for her contributions. Since her departure from a senior position in Keir Starmer’s government due to unresolved tax issues related to a property, Ms. Rayner has maintained a relatively low profile. Despite her absence from the Labour party’s annual conference, she garnered applause from party supporters, with calls for her return.

It took over a month for Ms. Rayner to make her first public statement after resigning, emphasizing her commitment to advocating for important governmental issues. Notable among these are the Renters’ Rights Act, recently passed into law, and significant enhancements to workers’ rights through the Employment Rights Bill, which she defended in Parliament.

Although she was not leading the child poverty task force, it is evident that Ms. Rayner had a keen interest in its development during her time in government. This interest was apparent as she attentively listened to Gordon Brown, a mentor she has been closely aligned with politically for more than a decade.

A confidant of Ms. Rayner shared with The Mirror: “This is a cause that Angela deeply cares about. She holds Gordon in high regard and is actively engaged in listening to his views.” In 2020, Ms. Rayner strongly criticized the two-child benefit limit as “inhumane.” While serving as Deputy PM, she stood by the government’s stance on the policy despite calls for its repeal. If the government falls short of Gordon Brown’s aspirations regarding the child poverty task force, it is likely that Ms. Rayner will feel compelled to speak out.
