Frank Beard, the drummer of the famous Texas boogie-rock band ZZ Top, known for his role in hit songs like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. Beard died at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, while under hospice care, surrounded by his family, as confirmed by publicist Bob Merlis. Billy Gibbons, the band’s co-founder and guitarist, along with bassist Elwood Francis, expressed his condolences and praised Beard’s drumming style as essential to ZZ Top’s success.

ZZ Top, renowned for selling over 50 million records and achieving six No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, mourns the loss of their longtime member. Beard, reflecting on his musical journey in the 2019 documentary “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” expressed his dedication to the band, stating, “I’ve found the people I was meant to play with.”

Formed in 1969, ZZ Top originated from Frankston, Texas, with Beard meeting Gibbons in a previous band called The Moving Sidewalks. The trio, including Dusty Hill on bass and vocals, drew inspiration from blues and rock influences, creating a distinctive sound that resonated with audiences worldwide. Their iconic appearance, characterized by long beards and dark sunglasses, remained a constant throughout their five-decade career.

Recognized for their witty and engaging lyrics, ZZ Top’s songs found success in Hollywood films, with tracks like “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs” featured in popular movies. Their debut album, “ZZ Top’s First Album,” marked the beginning of their musical journey, blending rock, blues, and funk elements into what was described as a “steaming-hot Houston stew.”

ZZ Top’s commercial breakthrough came with the release of “La Grange” on the album “Tres Hombres,” propelling them to fame with their unique sound and captivating performances. Over the years, the band evolved their music style, incorporating new elements and technologies while maintaining their signature Texan roots.

The band’s distinctive look, characterized by their long beards, was a result of a casual decision made during a break in the mid-1970s. The trio’s relaxed approach to grooming became a defining feature of ZZ Top’s image, resonating with fans and becoming synonymous with their rock-chic persona.

With the passing of Frank Beard, ZZ Top bids farewell to a legendary musician who contributed significantly to their success. His legacy lives on through the band’s timeless music and enduring impact on the music industry. Beard is survived by his wife, Debbie Meredith, and three children, leaving behind a profound musical legacy cherished by fans worldwide.
