A talented young jockey, Bryson Butterfly, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in the tragic death of a high school student. Butterfly, a Native American from a Washington State reservation, was gaining recognition for his riding skills at various tracks in Maryland, West Virginia, and Philadelphia.
The incident occurred in 2023 when Butterfly was arrested alongside two others in connection with the murder of 17-year-old Elias Cieslak in Baltimore County. In 2024, Butterfly pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge related to armed robbery and agreed to cooperate with authorities in exchange for a reduced sentence.
According to reports, Butterfly confessed to setting up a drug deal with Cieslak, knowing that two individuals, Marcus Powell and David Lofton, intended to rob him. Tragically, Cieslak was fatally shot by Powell during the confrontation.
Powell accepted guilt and received a life sentence, with 40 years suspended, while Lofton faced trial and was also handed a life sentence with 50 years suspended. Butterfly, appearing in court in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, expressed remorse for his actions, citing fear of Powell who had a gun.
While addressing the court, Butterfly tearfully apologized to the victim’s family, acknowledging his deep regret. Despite believing in Butterfly’s remorse, Judge Stacy Mayer imposed the requested custodial sentence, emphasizing the need for accountability in Cieslak’s death.
Judge Mayer commented on Butterfly’s wasted potential and stressed the importance of holding him responsible for his role in the tragic incident.
