The ex-partner who exposed convicted child abuser Ian Watkins has expressed surprise at the delayed justice that led to his death in prison.
Jo Mjadzelics, aged 48, was the whistleblower who initially alerted authorities about the musician’s disturbing inclinations towards children, which were disregarded. Watkins, also 48, was fatally assaulted in prison, where he was serving a lengthy sentence for various sexual crimes, including offenses against minors and infants at HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire.
He was attacked with a weapon by another inmate on Saturday morning, according to reliable sources. Detectives from West Yorkshire Police’s homicide and major inquiry team are investigating the incident following reports from prison staff. Watkins was declared deceased at the scene.
The whistleblower had an intermittent relationship with Watkins since 2006, when the musician contacted her on MySpace and confessed his disturbing desires. Despite her efforts to alert authorities about his attraction to young children over a four-year period, her warnings were consistently disregarded.
Watkins was eventually apprehended during a police raid at his residence in Pontypridd in September 2012 under a drug warrant. Reflecting on the news of his demise, Jo stated, “The sudden news was shocking, eliciting tears from the surprise rather than grief for him.
“As previously mentioned, I am astonished that it took nearly 13 years for this to occur, considering the extent of protection he received. I was deeply concerned that he might be released and come after me.”
The former Lostprophets frontman was sentenced in December 2013 for multiple child sexual offenses, including an attempted assault on an infant. He received a 29-year prison term with an additional six years on parole eligibility, subject to serving two-thirds of the sentence.
Two female co-defendants, mothers of the abused children, were sentenced to 14 and 17 years respectively. During sentencing, Mr. Justice Royce described the case as pushing “new boundaries” and delving into “unprecedented depths of depravity.”
Although Watkins admitted to some charges, including attempted assault and sexual misconduct with a child under 13, he denied the rape accusations. In 2014, his appeal to reduce the sentence by half was rejected by the courts. As a young rock star, he achieved significant commercial success, selling millions of albums worldwide and attracting large audiences at arena shows.
Established in 1997, the Welsh rock band Lostprophets released five studio albums, including a chart-topping record in the UK and two singles in the Top 10. They also found moderate success in the United States, with two of their
