WhatsApp is set to address a major issue by introducing a new feature, encouraging users to take action promptly to stay current. Presently, users communicate on the platform by sharing phone numbers, a method that is not always convenient.
After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is finally addressing this by introducing unique usernames. This change will allow users to share their usernames instead of their phone numbers.
According to WhatsApp, sharing a phone number can be a significant step when connecting with new acquaintances like classmates, neighbors, event contacts, or group chat members. The new feature aims to provide users with the option to chat without divulging their phone numbers.
Moreover, this update will enhance privacy in group conversations. For instance, individuals joining community or social group chats can participate without immediately disclosing their phone numbers to strangers.
Users can now start reserving their preferred usernames before the full launch. Given the massive user base, popular usernames might get taken quickly. Therefore, early reservations offer users a better chance of securing their desired username without missing out.
To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username.
The rollout of this feature will occur gradually in the upcoming months, with WhatsApp notifying users when usernames become available in their region.
