Terrifying new footage has emerged, revealing the wing of a UPS plane catching fire just moments before the aircraft crashed and exploded in a deadly fireball. The tragic incident occurred after the UPS plane, carrying 38,000 gallons of fuel, erupted into a fireball shortly after departing from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport in Kentucky at 5:15 pm local time. The crash resulted in the loss of nine lives, including four individuals who were not aboard the aircraft. Additionally, eleven people sustained injuries, with two in critical condition, according to authorities.
Captured during take-off, a dramatic video shows the plane’s left wing emitting smoke as it struggles to ascend before crashing to the ground seconds later, engulfing the vicinity in flames. Aviation attorney Pablo Rojas commented that based on the footage, the aircraft seemed to have difficulty gaining altitude with a fire on its left side near one of its engines. Given the substantial fuel load, once the fire ignited in that area, an explosion or rapid fire growth was inevitable.
Former Department of Transportation inspector general Mary Schiavo noted that the engine appeared to detach from the aircraft before the final impact and subsequent fireball. An investigation by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently ongoing to determine the crash’s cause involving a McDonnell Douglas MD-11F aircraft.
Following the crash, a fuel recycling business adjacent to the airport suffered a direct hit from the plane, while a car parts business was also impacted by the wreckage. Firefighters worked tirelessly through the night to contain the extensive fire, establishing a search grid for potential victims. The airport remained closed the next day and was anticipated to remain so for several more hours.
Louisville Police Chief Paul Humphrey stated to reporters that the scene’s safety assessment timeframe was uncertain. Fire chief Brian O’Neill confirmed that the plane triggered secondary explosions upon impacting fuel tanks at the recycling center, some of which contained propane and oil. He further explained the occurrence of small tank ruptures leading to the secondary explosions.
The tragic event has left a deep impact on the community, with investigations ongoing to determine the full extent of the incident and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
