“UPS Cargo Jet Crash in Kentucky Claims 12 Lives”

Published:

A tragic incident unfolded as a UPS cargo jet crashed in Kentucky, resulting in a fireball and claiming the lives of 12 individuals. According to investigators, the catastrophic event occurred when the aircraft’s engine detached during takeoff.

The preliminary findings of the investigation were revealed today, following the devastating crash at Louisville’s Muhammad Ali International Airport on Tuesday evening, which saw the death toll climb to 12. Security footage from the airport depicted the left engine separating from the 34-year-old McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as it accelerated down the runway, leading to a fiery explosion and a collision with nearby industrial structures.

Todd Inman, an official from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), disclosed that airport surveillance footage captured the moment the left engine broke away from the wing during takeoff. He stated, “Following clearance for takeoff, a significant fire erupted near the left wing during the takeoff run.”

Inman further described the extensive debris field scattered over approximately half a mile, indicating the challenging task of locating survivors in the charred aftermath of the crash. Despite ongoing search efforts in the vicinity, the chances of finding survivors appear slim.

The ill-fated plane was en route to Honolulu when it managed to ascend briefly before crashing outside the airport perimeter, colliding with Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Autoparts. The resulting blaze illuminated the night sky, igniting a substantial fire that extended half a mile along the industrial belt.

In response to the disaster, Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency early Wednesday to expedite aid to the crash site. Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed the tragic toll had risen to 12, encompassing the loss of three UPS crew members, several ground workers, and a child. Greenberg expressed his sorrow, stating, “I’m deeply saddened to share that the death toll has risen to 12, with several individuals still unaccounted for.” Additionally, 11 individuals sustained injuries in the incident.
