Donald Trump has authorized Ukraine to utilize specific long-range missiles provided by Western allies following the cancellation of a scheduled meeting with Vladimir Putin. A crucial restriction on their deployment has been removed, granting Kyiv the capability to target deep within Russia and apply pressure on the Kremlin, according to US officials on Wednesday.
Recently, Ukraine launched British-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles at a chemical facility in Russia’s Bryansk region, as announced by Ukraine’s General Staff of the Armed Forces on social media, labeling it a “successful hit.” Ukrainian forces stated that the targeted Russian plant is involved in the production of gunpowder, explosives, and components for rocket fuel used in ammunition and missiles that are used to shell Ukrainian territory.
The decision to allow such attacks was transferred from US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to General Alexus Grynkewich, the top US general in Europe and NATO commander, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. This shift occurred without prior notice.
The missile strike, which utilized UK-manufactured missiles, coincided with a commitment by PM Keir Starmer and other European leaders to escalate economic and defense industry pressure on Russia until Putin is willing to engage in peace negotiations.
The failed talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Budapest recently prompted Trump to express his reluctance to engage in fruitless meetings with the Russian president. Trump has been urging Putin to negotiate an end to the conflict since early October, following their last meeting in Alaska in August.
During a recent trip to Israel, Trump hinted at the possibility of sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine if the war persisted. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been advocating for increased military assistance from the US, particularly Tomahawk missiles with a range of 1,550 miles.
Although initially considering supplying Ukraine with Tomahawks, Trump has since refrained from the idea due to the potential escalation it might cause with Moscow. Russia had cautioned in September that US assistance in launching Tomahawks could be viewed as direct involvement in the conflict.
The Storm Shadow missile, developed by Britain and France, has a range of over 180 miles and can be launched from Ukrainian aircraft. The US retains control over Ukraine’s use of the missile due to its dependency on American targeting data.
