A groundbreaking initiative has been unveiled to expose scammers who use fake phone numbers.
Government officials have committed to eradicating the practice of “spoofing,” where international calls appear to originate from the UK, within the next year. Advanced artificial intelligence technology will be leveraged to detect and prevent fraudsters from reaching potential victims.
Major telecommunications companies in the UK have joined forces with the authorities to address this issue. Lord Hanson, the Minister for Fraud, emphasized the deceptive nature of spoofed calls, enabling scammers to use false identities and promises to defraud the public.
Lord Hanson stated, “Our government is resolute in combating fraud. Through a significant enhancement of our mobile network infrastructure, spoofed calls will be eradicated within a year, removing scammers’ tools for swindling individuals out of their money.”
He added, “We are intensifying our defenses to shield victims and ensure that the UK becomes the most challenging environment for scammers to operate in globally.”
Telecom operators have agreed to enhance data sharing with law enforcement agencies, while advanced call tracing technology will be implemented across their networks.
The new Telecoms Charter, signed by major providers including BT EE, Virgin Media O2, VodafoneThree, Tesco Mobile, Talk Talk, Sky, and Comms Council UK (CCUK), aims to combat fraudulent activities in the telecommunications sector.
Research shows that three-quarters of the British population are unlikely to answer calls from unfamiliar international numbers.
Brian Webb, chair of the Communications Crime Strategy Group, affirmed, “The measures we have committed to will bring about tangible change, from expanding trusted data sharing and enhancing call security, to the responsible use of artificial intelligence and providing swift support to victims.”
