“UK Residents Urged to Prepare for Digital Voice Transition”

A significant shift in telephone technology is on the horizon for UK residents, necessitating proactive action by homeowners before an impending deadline. The traditional copper landlines that have facilitated communication for years are being phased out in favor of a new system known as Digital Voice, which leverages broadband technology for making calls.

This transition not only aligns with modern communication requirements but also enhances reliability and introduces new functionalities like improved call clarity, call forwarding to mobile devices, and enhanced call screening capabilities to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls.

Scheduled to take effect in January 2027, the comprehensive upgrade is prompting BT to launch an awareness campaign, led by Clare Balding, urging households to assess their landline setups and prepare for the digital era.

Coinciding with recent research indicating a tendency among Brits to procrastinate essential tasks, the campaign emphasizes the importance of responding promptly to communications from service providers to avoid disruptions in essential services.

Customers are assured that they are likely to retain their existing phone numbers, with costs expected to remain stable during the transition. Most households will only need to connect their current phones to their broadband hubs instead of the traditional wall sockets, eliminating the need for technician visits in most cases.

Lucy Baker, Consumer Digital Voice Director at BT, underscored the significance of embracing the digital landline shift, emphasizing the benefits of enhanced reliability and security offered by the updated technology.

Moreover, BT recommends that customers with specific needs, such as users of telecare devices or pendant alarms, promptly inform their providers to ensure tailored support is in place.

Digital Voice, BT’s latest home phone service, eschews copper in favor of broadband connectivity, offering enhanced features like Multi Call and call diversion to mobile devices. The improved call quality and modern functionalities of Digital Voice are expected to enhance user experiences, though compatible Digital Home phones will be necessary to access these features.

For most households, the transition to Digital Voice will not disrupt their phone usage habits, as the cost of the new service is bundled with broadband fees. Customers can expect no additional charges for Digital Voice services.
