British authorities have sent officers to India in pursuit of a husband wanted for the alleged murder of his wife in the United Kingdom. The victim, Harshita Brella, aged 24, was reportedly strangled at her residence in Northamptonshire. Her body was later found in a Vauxhall Corsa in Ilford, East London, on November 14 of the previous year. Prior to her tragic death, Harshita had sought help from law enforcement, citing abuse by her spouse, Pankaj Lamba.
In a bid to assist with the investigation, detectives flew to India in July to engage with Harshita’s family and return her personal effects. Meanwhile, Indian authorities are actively seeking Lamba. Detective Superintendent Johnny Campbell expressed condolences to Harshita’s loved ones and highlighted the ongoing support provided by Northamptonshire Police to the grieving family.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is looking into Northamptonshire Police’s interactions with the deceased woman. Reports indicate that Harshita was strangled in Corby on the evening of November 10 and her body was transported to Ilford the following day. Lamba, aged 23, departed for India from Heathrow airport just three days before the discovery of Harshita’s remains. Surveillance footage allegedly captured him withdrawing money from an ATM in Gurugram, south of Delhi, in March.
Sonia Dabas, Harshita’s sister, expressed frustration over the lack of information provided by Northamptonshire Police and revealed legal action taken in Delhi to prompt the Indian government’s involvement. Mr. Campbell pointed out that a murder investigation was initiated a year ago following the discovery of Harshita’s body in London. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently charged Lamba with murder in March.
The detective emphasized the complexity of the case and refrained from divulging further details due to ongoing legal proceedings. Nevertheless, he confirmed that Indian authorities have been informed of the charge. Campbell reiterated the commitment to bringing justice in Harshita’s case and extended sympathies to her bereaved family.
In a poignant interview, Harshita’s mother, Sudesh Kumari, recounted her daughter’s distress before the tragedy, stating that Harshita had expressed fear for her life due to her husband’s behavior. Describing Harshita as a gentle and non-confrontational individual, Sudesh lamented the loss of her daughter’s life.
