“UK Leaders React to Synagogue Attack on Yom Kippur”

Published:

Keir Starmer will depart from a European conference in Denmark ahead of schedule to lead an urgent Cobra meeting following an assault on a synagogue in Manchester.

The Prime Minister expressed shock and dismay over the incident, stating that extra police resources are being dispatched to synagogues nationwide. The attack, occurring on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, was condemned by the PM.

In a statement, he said, “I am horrified by the assault at a synagogue in Crumpsall. The timing on Yom Kippur makes it even more tragic. My thoughts are with those affected, and I extend gratitude to the emergency services and first responders.”

Following an incident where a car was driven into the public and a man was stabbed outside a synagogue in Manchester, resulting in four injuries and two fatalities according to GMP, the PM curtailed his attendance at the European Political Community (EPC) gathering in Copenhagen. The suspect, shot by officers, triggered a “Plato” response from Greater Manchester Police.

Before returning to the UK, Starmer emphasized the shock of the Manchester attack, promising additional police presence at synagogues nationwide for community safety. He acknowledged discussions with key figures and expressed appreciation for the rapid emergency response.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and Health Secretary Wes Streeting also denounced the assault, offering support and solidarity with the Jewish community. Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch condemned the attack as vile and appalling, especially on Yom Kippur.

The Greater Manchester Police declared a major incident, with shots fired and injuries treated by paramedics. Public cooperation was urged to facilitate the ongoing police operation.

Starmer’s visit to Denmark focused on discussions about Ukraine and migration with European leaders. The PM’s recent announcement regarding changes in asylum policies aims to address illegal migration and strengthen support for Ukraine while deterring unauthorized crossings.
