After the lifting of a shelter-in-place order, N.W.T. RCMP revealed that two individuals were apprehended in Fort Smith following a “mass shooting incident” that left three individuals injured in the community early Saturday. Authorities mentioned that it is premature to establish a direct connection between the two arrested individuals and the incident, but they have strong suspicions that the attack was targeted.
At around 4 p.m. MT, RCMP informed CBC News that two persons of interest had been detained, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the investigation regarding their possible involvement. Subsequently, before 4:30 p.m., law enforcement announced that the public could resume their regular activities as there was no immediate threat to the community. However, an increased police presence would be noticeable as the investigation continues.
The incident unfolded around 2:12 a.m. when reports of gunfire outside a local establishment in the small community of Fort Smith, with a population of slightly over 2,000 residents, were received by the police. Witnesses mentioned that the shooting occurred outside Dirty O’Fergies bar during the conclusion of the Fireweed Festival, a local music event.
The three victims of the shooting are currently receiving medical attention, although their identities have not been disclosed by the authorities. Emergency response units from N.W.T. and the Yukon have been aiding the RCMP, supported by police canines, drones, and the major crimes unit. A description of the suspect was provided by the police, identifying him as a male with a heavy build, medium complexion, black hair, and facial hair, dressed in a gray sweater. The public was advised not to approach the suspect and to immediately contact the RCMP if spotted.
Additionally, the RCMP cautioned against the dissemination of AI-generated images of the suspect circulating on social media, as they do not correspond with the official descriptions provided by law enforcement. A community portal has been established by the police for the collection of digital evidence from potential witnesses.
Mayor Dana Fergusson of Fort Smith urged calm within the community, emphasizing the strength and unity of the residents. Recounting the incident that unfolded in front of her at Dirty O’Fergies bar, Fergusson highlighted the need for collective resilience in the face of such tragic events.
Despite the turmoil, the Fireweed Festival organizers announced that the event would proceed as planned, following the removal of the shelter-in-place order. They acknowledged the gravity of the situation while expressing hope and solidarity within the community.
